Kingsford Starch Company
Thomas Kingsford perfected the process to create starch from corn in 1842. Six years later, he selected Oswego for his starch plant because it was “where pure water, excellent shipping facilities and water power existed”.
Oswego Ship Building
“From the 18th century until well after the Civil War, more than 300 vessels of all shapes and sizes were built in Oswego.” (Michael J. Colasurdo, Oswego History) Hundreds of people were employed during the height of the ship building era in Oswego, NY. However, that number dropped to just a few dozen after tariffs were enacted in the mid 1800’s.
